Alumni Chapters Make the World a Better Place

Embry-Riddle alumni around the world gave back to their local communities in celebration of International Eagle Day on Oct. 24, 2009. Leaders of several Alumni Chapters organized activities in an effort to support their communities and show Embry-Riddle pride.

Several Chapters chose a community service project that would support their local aviation community. Alumni in Atlanta, for example, cleaned up the aviation-themed playground at Fulton County Airport-Brown Field (pictured at right). The San Diego Chapter assisted in the Vought F4U-4 Corsair and the Cessna 0-1 Birddog restoration projects at the USS Midway Museum on NAS North Island. And in Wichita, alumni helped prepare a new exhibit room at the Kansas Aviation Museum that will document the history of the old terminal building that now houses the museum.

Other Chapters found unique projects to volunteer at in their communities. Daytona Beach Chapter members cleaned up a stretch of beach behind the Ocean Deck restaurant. Alumni who participated received an alumni t-shirt and 20% off their lunch ticket that day. The newly-formed Prescott Chapter adopted a roadway near the Prescott campus to clean each month.  After walking four miles, alumni had picked up over 200 lbs. of trash.

In Connecticut, the Sikorsky Chapter volunteered at a local animal shelter where they helped clean the shelter’s landscaping and paint inside. Afterward, alumni were given a tour of the shelter and were able to meet some of its animals up for adoption.

The National Capitol Area Chapter members were already feeling the holiday spirit as they stuffed holiday greeting cards for the country’s military service men and women.  They met in the historic Roosevelt Room in Terminal A of Reagan National Airport to send some cheer to those serving overseas.  The cards will be delivered by local USO chapters.

Chicago alumni celebrated International Eagle Day early this year, on Oct. 17, by assisting in a Habitat for Humanity project to help build a house for a family in need.
